Strategies to Manage Pesticides

Overall Evaluation

University of California, Davis

September 17-21, 2002

WHAT WERE THE STRENGTHS OF THIS COURSE? WHAT DID YOU VALUE MOST?

bulletAs always a great job! Thanks.
bulletMeeting and mixing with other regulators.
bulletState presentations generally very good. Able to see what other states are doing.
bulletGroup presentations about different issues.
bulletGreat job! Was skeptical at first, especially about workgroups but was very much impressed with outcome.
bulletExcellent presenters, great state presenters. Excellent idea for states, good sharing, want to see this again! Very comprehensive program.
bulletOpen discussion and immediate feedback. Course content. Field trips.
bulletPresentations were targeted to current issues to the states present. Valued the time to speak with and discuss programs with all presenters.
bulletHow others are using technology, what worked, what did not. I valued the networking, new technologies that we can implement.
bulletThe opportunity to work in small groups was most valuable. I was sorry that this portion of the program was often shortened. The program is long. I think it could be shortened by at least an entire day. The notebook is valuable however.
bulletApplications of the concepts we discussed.
bulletPeter Nowak and Faust Gorham provided very good, thought provoking presentations.
bulletThe group problems were well chosen and appropriately difficult to be a good simulation of the real world. It was certainly more palatable to work on the problems in a group than individually.
bulletThe course discussed issues that I had little experience with. I found the information valuable.
bulletThe logical sequence of topics and culmination with exercise was very beneficial. Often, courses do not do well with the application portion. Field trips were also very productive and applicable across states (would be applied to any number of WPS). Great addition or complement to "future of technology" presentation as well. As has been my experience, PREP courses are well organized, full of information and provide opportunities to learn not only from presenters but also from other participants. The networking component is one of the strengths of the course. I would like to see more time built in to allow for those presentations that take longer than planned. You could avoid having to rush through topics. You could have a number of "if we have more time" topics to fill in if needed. In addition, participants could spend a few extra minutes at the end of the day if necessary. I would be willing! As for logistics, PREP continues to provide for all our needs. I would ask if there was an alternative to the shuttle we use. At this and other courses this is the only problem component (reservations, etc.) Thank you! Great Job!!

HOW COULD THIS COURSE BE IMPROVED?

bulletExtend each day by one hour and shorten the whole course by one day.
bulletGive scoring criteria for final day’s group presentation in the beginning, not just before presentation. 4 days instead of 5. Need blank note pages in binder. Need to keep group presentations. Also should share group questions prior to course to consider in application. Need to try to run on time more often. Switching laptops is not a problem. Need more enforcement-type topics. Nice job!
bulletMy table kept shaking: ventilation system? There should be handouts for all presentations. Five days seem one and a half days too long.
bulletAllow us to fly out the final day, or make it a four-day course. Try to increase the data collected and use it in a useful method.
bulletDidn't need a second field trip. More time for discussion.
bulletWas not excited about all the time spent with the group activity. Purpose? Time could have been better spent.
bulletAllow multiple members of one state to attend together.
bulletThe state presentations were useful, but there could have been fewer of them.
bulletMore real world actual application of the concepts.
bulletDon't change agenda at the last minute.
bulletI think the PREP/UNEX fleet of computers need a tune-up or upgrade. Video projector is great, but it might be time to get a new infrared remote or wireless PF remote to connect to it. It seems ridiculous that a presenter has so much difficulty advancing slides and absolutely no success returning to a previous slide.

HOW WILL YOU APPLY WHAT YOU LEARNED?

bulletUse it in ways not used now.
bulletChange statute, implementing new policies and procedures.
bulletImplementation.
bulletHope to implement at least one technology by the end of 2003.
bulletCompliance.
bulletBe open to technological innovations.

OTHER COURSES/TOPICS YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE US OFFER?

bulletSee other state programs.
bulletNeed another combo course. WPS, state reporting and grant development.
bulletPREP on EPA/ state cooperation/evaluation.
bulletWPS, a course on teaching farmers how to comply with WPS. Not what they need to do but what they need to so to comply with WPS.
